Unit 3 :idea of progress

The Idea of Progress is the theory that the different advances in technology, science, and social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition. People can become happier in terms of quality of life (social progress) through economic development (modernization), and the application of science and technology (scientific progress).

Progress implies change and evolution and throughout history most of the advances have been positive. However the rhythm of progress seems to have accelerated over the last few decades and the technological breakthroughs and scientific developments are causing some people to question this progress. What effect do these « advances » have on our society?

1.Technological Progress:

The fifth power :

Steve jobs a visionary because he anticipated what people wanted .Iconic entrepreneur and a pioneer who was always one step ahead of everyone in his field. He was able to envision what people wanted. He managed to adapt to circumstances and to take advantages of opportunities. He designed and imagined some of the best , the coolest , and also the simplest technological devices in the world.

( the man use his intelligence to improve all the daily object around him to find something more useful  to all of us , so he managed to overcome the step of mobile and he decided to create a second him : he called it the robot.)

– Robots, automated production

In a document we have observed two robots who are androids. The first has mechanical joints visible but the other looks like a real young woman. It has a face and a female body rather realistic. Today, the man is able to invent impressionnant things. he have the capacity to  create machines with artificial intelligence similar to our  intelligence. For example, Waston which  is a gigantic computer with an impressive intelligence. It is able to beat the best in several fields. This breakthrough is really a feat for the experts. Watson is the most important advance in computing of this century. Other robots could improve our quality of life in our homes and workplaces by increasingly taking over boring, monotonous and dangerous tasks.

2. Social Progress:

Rosa parks was an extraordinary woman who stood up against racism and for hersey even if it was more difficult for women then. One day , she sat in the front row of a bus , it was forbidden for black people. She refused to move so she was arrested.in 1955 ,they noted( mlk and her)that no black riders on the yellow buses : the black people boycotted buses for her and it become a huge success. Rules were established:

-customers could sit wherever they want

- drivers should respect all riders

-black people were allowed to apply for a driver position

She never stopped fighting for the courage and strength

Thanks to her , segregation in buses became illegal

Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) was a British suffragette who fought for women’s rights in UK in the early 20th century . She purposed ideas of political equality only theoretical without suffragettes

She risked her health , respectability , financial security , her life for the cause of votes for women. Thanks to her women are able today to vote and get offices.
