Idea of Progress

I’m going to deal with the notion Idea of Progress. First I’d like to give a definition of the notion: The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change. It can be a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. But, sometimes, the progress cans products negative things, nuclear bombs for example.

In relation to the notion, the topic of my presentation would be the progress of internet.

We may wonder in what extend social networking sites are an improvement or a danger.

I will first talk about the positive points, the progress given by the internet and then I will deal with the negative points.

Internet is a real technological break trough, who revolutionized the world. Today more than the half of the world has an access to internet. It permits to find anything you want to know. Thanks to social networks, you can communicate more easily. It’s really interesting to meet new friends all over the world, to talk with them and to learn different languages. The development of internet has also a real importance on a global scale because it permits the trade. It’s possible for example to buy something else on internet. More, there is a lot association defending different causes. Too for example, in Haiti, when the catastrophe appeared a lot of people were to ready to jump to help in 5 minutes the disaster happened.

However, social networks are not always positive, there is a negative point. Several people use them for bad things. On internet there is a lot of pedophile or killers enrolled in social network with false account just to attract a prey and after to harm. It’s the same for groups of people to leave their country, to the kill and make the war (terrorist groups for example).

Even, if internet is a wonderful tad, I think it’s necessary to be really careful.

Any progress is welcomed to grow the well-being of people, but it is for us to use it in good ways, for good reasons. In wrong hands, a technical progress can do more harms than good.

According to me Internet and social networking illustrate the notion “Idea of Progress” because it give us too opportunities as business, communication or research.
