IDEA OF PROGRESS

The 14th of february, a shooter walked into an American school and opened fire. He killed 17 people. This events are quite prevalent in US and more and more americans want more gun control. Thereby, i am going to talk about the idea of progress in the gun control issue in united states. We are going to ask ourselves if there should be more gun control in America.

First of all, we will see the pros and then the cons of gun control

I- Why there should be more gun control in America

When it comes to the right for americans to own guns, we have to consider what is the second amendment. “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”

The defenders of gun control says that the second amendment is no longer relevant. That is what represents a cartoon that shows us a militia men whit a rifle as the second amendment for the founding fathers , and a citizen with several assault rifles and a lot of ammunations, as the second amendment for the National Rifle Association.

Indeed, it has been adopted in 1791, and the society has evolved a lot. Nowadays we resort to justice and don’t fix problems through a gun fight.

Another perk to gun control is the gun violence in us. We’ve studied that through a poster from the Brady Campaign, comparing gun murdered in several countries to gun murdered in United States. For instance, there is 200 guns murdered in a year in Canada versus 9500 in US. But this document is not very interesting because it doesn't take into account the number of people in the country and thereby is not really representative. However, even if we take into account the number of guns murdered per habitants, the us is still very affected by gun violence.

An other document shows us a reason to support gun control. In fact, in this document, there is a baby with a gun pointed towards him and its written “a child a day is killed accidentally with a handgun”. This brings up the topic of letting handguns into wrong hands. Besides, we can think about mentally ill people who carry guns and could kill anybody at any moment, as it has been the case the last 14th of february.

Even if this arguments seems relevant and the number of supporters of gun control is increasing, a lot of americans are still standing with gun own ideology.

II- Why there shouldn’t be more gun control in America

The defenders of the right for americans to own guns are leaded by the National Rifle Association and the Gun Owners of America. First, one of their main argument is simply the Second Amendment, and think that the Founders understood that the individual right to own and bear guns is as fundamental and as essential to maintaining liberty as are the rights of free speech, a free press, freedom.
