Over the time the word « heroism » has evolved , changing the characteristic of this expression. Words have lost their meaning and today have become both vague and specific, and we rely on
connotation and equivocation instead of definition .
How heroism has been reinvented by the new generation ?
First of all we will see the evolution of heroism ,then if heroism is now a synonym of fame and finally the influence on the new generation.
Whether ancient or modern, the distinctive characteristic of the heroic figure, is to risk its life. A hero overcomes the continual fear of the violent death and is inclined to embrace its fate according to an internal sense of greatness or the exceptional virtue.
When you think of heroism, you might think of great acts of bravery. Heroism consists of putting others first, even at your own peril.
It seems that in our society, the connotation of the word is “someone who does something good that is beyond what is expected of them.”
In this vein, everything today is considered “heroic”: soldiers, politicians, activists, cancer survivors, and unwed mothers. Everybody who is “good” can also be given the label “heroic.”
But does it means that heroism is connected to celebrity ?
In today's society, celebrities and heroes are often considered one and the same. Often, when asked to name a personal hero, people will name a celebrity. Celebrities and heroes are different
types of people with different definitions. It is true that some celebrities perform heroic acts, and some heroes attain celebrity by their acts of kindness.
Celebrities are people that easily recognized in society ,they are known for their artistic abilities, athletic prowess or good looks. But heroes are people who help others in need or make a
change for the better in the lives of those around them and improve the world. There is similarities between both expressions which some people could assimilate in a single expression. Some celebrities contributed to help people and improved their lives thanks to their wealth and fame .
The new generation is strongly influenced by fame .
The new generation has been influenced by diverse manners, most of the young people of today want by desire or obligation to follow the movement and have their fifteen minutes of fame.
Andy Warhol ,an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. He created the expression "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes" in the program for a 1968 exhibition of his work at the
Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden. He had predicted the effects of the popularity in the current society. Nowadays nobody wants to be anonymous and feels the need to be under projectors.
Andy Warhol knew that everyone was going to be famous for 15 minutes and that, as a consequence, fame would melt into banality.
Heroism and fame are not always easily distinguished. Some heroes become celebrities and some celebrities can be heroic. But in general, the two words mean different things and refer to two different kinds of people. It can sometimes be confuse for the young people heroism evolve so much that it has been trivialize, it became a current expression of the language or to thank somebody having committed an act mattering for us.
