Doc:

  • Iconic photos from Life magazine
  • Kent State
  • Pentagon Papers
  • The Hippie movement
  • Pictures of anti-war demonstrations

Introduction:

I’m going to deal with the notion of Power and more specifically with the counter power against the Vietnam War. First of all, I will define the terms of the notion.  Power is the ability to influence people’s behavior; in order to live together the members of a community accept rules and laws. Even if the authority seems absolute there are always counter-powers which question it to limit its excesses and resist it. The Vietnam War was a long, costly and divisive conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. To illustrate the notion, I have selected 5 documents: “Behind the Race to publish the Top-Secret Pentagon Papers”, “Remembering Kent State”, “Iconic Photos from Life Magazine”, “The Hippie counterculture” and pictures of anti-war demonstrations. We will see how the American people managed to build a counter power during the Vietnam War. First, we will see the power of the Press, then the student protest and finally the power of the counterculture.

  1. Through the press
  1. With shocking pictures (Life Magazine)
  2. By unveiling Top-Secret information (Pentagon Papers)

  1. Through student protest
  1. Demonstrations
  2. Kent State
  1. Through culture
  1. The Hippie Movement
  2. Woodstock

Conclusion:

To conclude, we can say that American people managed to build a counter power to protest against the Vietnam War and this in different ways, through the press which revealed a lot of important information, but also through student protest and finally through a counterculture.
