Subject: How can his acquittal be explained?
Introduction:
OJ Simpsons in his full name Orenthal James Simpsons. He is a professional player of American football and also an actor. His career begins in 1972, he is in the best team of American football “The Buffalo Bills”. He’s actor career begin after retiring of football.
OJ Simpson is also known for being acquitted for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1994. This acquittal is perceived by many as an error, because the evidence against him should have been sufficient to convict him.
So how can his acquittal be explain?
The trial takes place in a particular context of racial tensions.
The LAPD, "the Los Angeles police", was at that time known for its numerous police violence against blacks peoples.
For example, 3 years before the murders of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman, 4 white policemen had beaten up a black man for speeding, and despite the video evidence that was released to the media, the 4 policemen were acquitted by a mostly white jury. This affair subsequently spawned the violent Los Angeles riots of 1992.
The defense strategy led by the lawyer Shapiro, was to use this racism known to the police to exonerate OJS.
He accused the LAPD's lead detective, Mark Fuhrman, of racism.
The latter denied under oath of being racist, but the defenders of Simpsons revealed recordings of Furhman making repeated racist remarks towards the Afro-Americans.
Moreover, being the first to find the bloody glove, he was accused of having tricked OJS with racist motives by fabricating evidence and when asked if he had done, he refused to answer and invoked his 5th amendment.
The lie and the refusal to answer discredited his testimony and therefore the accusation.
Shapiro also decided to engage in his dream team Johnnie Cochran, a famous lawyer who often intervened on behalf of victims of police violence. For him, ethnicity must play an important role in the selection of the jury.
He hoped that would work in OJS's favor who was admired by the black community as a successful black man and during this affair the majority of Afro-Americans thought him innocent.
The acquittal of OJS may also be explained by the weakness of the material evidence presented at the hearing, and the conditions under which it was collected by Los Angeles police investigators.
