English : 11 facts about gun violence in the US
1)Based on the material proposed on this website, pick up 3 specific facts, and explain how the same fact can be used either in favour of gun control, or in favour of the opposite position, depending on the opinion of the person on the subject (pro-gun or pro gun-control). _
The first fact is that gun homicides are declining in the USA. Gun rights supporters would say that because of it, there’s no need for gun restrictions. The others would say that we need to make decline the gun homicides even more to make the society progress in a positive way.
The second fact is that there are more gun suicides than gun homicides in America. Gun restrictions supporters would say that this is the fact that proves that guns kill people. Gun rights supporters would say on the contrary that guns aren’t killing people but that people are misusing them.
The third fact is that mass shootings represent a small percentage of all shooting deaths. Gun rights supporters would say that we aren’t in a though situation and that we only need to reduce mass shootings. The others would say on the opposite that guns are really a danger and that there are so much more shootings than we think.
2)In your opinion, why is it so complicated for American people to agree on a common position on the issue of gun control?
Before i start, in my opinion the issue of gun control in the USA is a unique problem. No other developed country in the world can match with the USA in terms of gun ownership even if we take in account the population.
First and foremost, people in charge of their government don’t share the same view as the population. The NRA stays on her position and exerce a political power due to the money they stack with the sale of weapons. This makes it hard for the gun restrictions supporters because they belong to the people and have no power to change the laws easily.
Secondly, Americans are so much attached to their guns to the point that they hold around 40 percent of the guns in the world while they are only 4,5 percent of the world population. So even if laws about gun restrictions were passing by, the mass shootings would not stop before a very long moment.
Finally, a good portion of Americans adopt a double standard. Even if they see developed countries like Australia change their life conditions : they themselves would not compare it to their issue.
