Colin Kaepernick is an American football quarterback. He decided to kneel down during the national anthem to protest against police brutality and racial injustice and support BLM. Following this event Nike choose him as the face of the Just do it campaign. Subsequently, the feedbacks were quite mixed, indeed some agree like Serena Williams, but many deride and go as far as burning their pairs of trainers and boycotting the sport brand.
We might ask whether Colin Kaepernick can be considered as a hero.
To do this, we will see that Colin Kaepernick is a hero but that he remains especially objectionable.
Firstly, we can at first sight easily affirm that Kaepernick is a hero for sacrificing his career in order to protest for motif valuable like Civil rights Movement. Indeed, there has been an impact on him but at the same time a true hero should emerge victorious of his struggle, but the truth is that it can backfire. In this case, Colin Kaepernick faces several controversies and in addition he is jeopardising his career and the evidence is there, he’s been unsigned since then and entangled in a lawsuit with the NFL.
Moreover, nobody can deny the fact that he strived to be extremely brave, it is a strong commitment and not all and sundry would be willing to endanger it career. Besides, he can be seen as a disrespectful character. Indeed, to protest he choose to target the whole country which runs out of sense because not the whole nation is to blame for the discrimination against black people.
Secondly, he seems to be a hero once we draw a parallel with the Olympics game in 1968, but on the other hand, true results are not blatant so maybe it is pointless. Indeed, The Civil Rights Movements was more useful and needed as the situation was worse.
Then, he did have an influence and he is still genuinely influent, multiple collaboration between his and Nike have emerged, the last of these, dated December 28, 2019 reveals a pair of black sneakers bearing the image of the fight of Colin Kaepernick. Nevertheless, in greater detail the reasons why Colin Kaepernick is in the middle of a controversy don’t seem so philanthropic and committed as they seem. Indeed, this is very profitable to him to be the new face of Nike. According to Forbes, the deal between Kaepernick and Nike worth million per year.
Thus, Colin Kaepernick is a hero in the eyes of many however his action did not really have any real effects on the condition of black in the USA. Moreover, Nike took advantage of the Kaepernick’s fire to involve a contract of several million dollars.
We might wonder if Rosa Parks was a hero.
