15th February 2017,
Dear sir,
I am writing to you in the representation of the Students Against Sweatshops Organisation in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
The initiative of our organisation consist in all been committed to work together to identify and promote good practices in the implementation of labor codes of conduct for workers in textile factories. We believe in effectively improve the working conditions of workers, because every human being has the right to be working conditions that respect ethical trading.
Recently we saw how the press was indicating the violations of the codes ethical trading code by the subcontractors companies working for sportswear supplies. In China, workers of those companies are earning less than the legal minimum wage in their country as they put in often 15 hours a day, to produce merchandise for the next Olympics. That paid do not cover the legal standards of the nation. Putting people woking long hours and give to them a the salary that is not sufficient to cover basic needs and provide a minimum surplus, shows a disrespect to the humains rights. Making things worse, children as young as five are also exploited, It is not under discussion that child labor is prohibited.
Is a fact that the Olympics is a amazing event that give a reason to millions of people of all over the world to be unite. It shows where the passion, determination and discipline can take you. It gives to all those people determination to embrase values has respect, teem work and to play fairly.
it is incompatible with the Olympic spirit to sell all this merchandise that is made by the hard work of people ho are really in need, is really sad the fact that those companies are abusing of the need of those people to exploit them, and then sell all those things to the rich peoples.
We thing the right thing to do is to ensure that this poor people get what the deserve, so we ask you to confirm that all companies participating in the manufacture or distribution of Olympic merchandise guarantee rejection of child exploitation, equality between men and women work is made with dignity, honoring the human rights, and that the price paid to producers allows decent living conditions. We are waiting that the International Olympic Committee do the right thing and
prove they respect the Ethical Trading Code of Conduct demanding all those companies.
Do not less us down and act before is too late.
Diana Alonzo.
