- A “general election” is a legislative election: it is the opportunity for all British citizens to choose their MP, that is, the person who will represent their party at the territorial level (called constituency) in the House of Commons for a maximum of five years. to obtain a majority, a political party must obtain a little more than half of the number of members in the House of Commons (650) Therefore, more than 326 votes must be cast
- The result of the election is 365 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.
- The Labour Party achieved its worst result since 1935 (203 seats), its number of Mps decreased (lost 59) and it also lost seats to the Conservatives. The party leader announced his resignation for 2020.
The Liberal Democrats lost only one less seat than in the previous election. Their leader lost his seat so he is no longer the leader of the party. For the other parties the result is positive with some more seats than in the previous elections but the victory remains very difficult.
