The theme I am going to deal with is “Characters and their transformation “. The term of transformation defines a profound and radical change which will lead the original work in a new direction. It implies a change of characters, places, time or the way of writing for example which will have little resemblances with its origin.
The question I wondered is:
Exploring or exploding the canon?
First of all, I’m going to talk about the adaptation of the O.J Simpson scandal in the American Crime Story TV show which is produced by Ryan Murphy. Then, I’m going to compare the Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare to West Side Story by Arthur Laurents
I - oj simpson
In 1994, Nicole Brown, the ex-wife of famed American football player O.J. Simpson, and a Ron Goldman server are savagely murdered in front of her property, while her children sleep peacefully upstairs.
A glove is found at the scene of the crime and a second, identical, in the property of OJ Simpson, soaked with the blood of his ex-wife and his.
Traces of DNA, contradictory statements, passive domestic violence etc., all incriminate the American star. His highly publicized and multi-broadcast trial on television deeply marked US judicial history and debates around the treatment of celebrities on the one hand, and African-Americans on the other.
The last moments of the trial, the announcement of the verdict, the reaction of the people outside the court, everything is reproduced in American Crime Story with an almost perfect and disturbing similarity. Just look at the real pictures of the O.J. Simpson case resolution in October 1995 to find out.
The time of the pursuit race, the intimate relationship between Marcia Clark and chriss darden up to the hearing to use more than ten hair of O.J for a DNA test. It's hardly like thinking about reality TV.
II - Comparison between Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story
Given that West Side Story is inspired by Romeo and Juliet, the two works have scenes in common but also differences. To begin,
similarities :
the characters meet in the same way that is to say at a ball.
Then there is the fact that Maria and Tony as well as Romeo and Juliet are not from the same group; Maria is in a clan while Tony is in the other and Juliet is part of a family while Romeo is part of the other.
And finally, the fact that they see each other in secret.
Then the differences:
first of all, Romeo and Juliet come from wealthy families while Maria and Tony are more of a middle-class family. Then Juliette kills herself while Maria does not do it while Tony dies.
Finally Romeo and Juliet get married while Maria and Tony do not.
