Can young people benefit from experience of adults?
“Believe in my experience”; we often hear this sentence, from our parents, our family, our friends, our entourage. But what do it means ?
It’s said that we can benefit from experiences of others.
Take young people for example. We may wonder if they really can benefit from experiences of adults; or if, these experiences are “past”, not actuality, not-compatible with the today’s world.
First of all, I’m going to show that, indeed, it’s benefit for younger people to profit of adult’s experiences. In the second place, we’ll see that most of these experiences can be eroded.
For a start, the older generation has a lot more life experience than the younger generation, so they can offer advices for young adults, and some traditional views, values, experiences are certainly applicable to the modern world. “Who benefits point of experience remains a child all his life”.
In the area of work, for example, older people can share the experience they've had working at a certain job, and describe its advantages as well as disadvantages. This makes it easier for someone who wants to enter in the job market for the first time, to decide whether a career in a desired field is really suitable.
Additionally, older people can also help with tips about skills sets, in order that they secure a dream job.
Older generations attach great importance to working hard, doing one’s best, and taking pride in one’s work, and these behaviours can surely benefit young people.
But, now, I’ll contradict myself by raising the serious problem of modernity in these older experiences. In the past, people were advised to learn a profession and find a secure job for life, but today’s worked expect much more variety and diversity from their careers.
In fact, it’s true that many older people keep in mind their experiences that often seem incompatible with the needs of younger people. Actually, many of the ideas that elderly people have about life are becoming less relevant for younger people.
At the same time, the “rules” around relationships are being eroded as young adults make their own choices, namely, for instance, with who and when they want to marry. But perhaps the greatest disparity between the generations can be seen in their attitudes towards gender roles. The traditional roles of men and women, as breadwinners and housewives, are no longer accepted as necessary or appropriate by most of younger people.
And last but not least, others will be able to say that nothing replaces the experience lived, that the experience is personally; when someone tell you: “doesn’t raise the hand on fire or you will burn you”, do you understand what means “burn”? Jean-Napoléon Vernier said “although each generation inherits of all knowledge past, the aberrations of fathers don’t make the children wisest because often, experience isn’t spread”.
In brief, although the views of older people may, sometimes, seem unhelpful in today’s world, we should not dismiss all traditional ideas as irrelevant. While I agree that some experiences are outdated, but I believe that others are
