Can India become a great power?
I’m going to talk about the notion which concerned the locations and forms of power in India.
To begin with, I’d like to give a definition of the power.
The power is the official capacity to exercise control and authority, and more especially in India I will talk about the Caste system.
Indeed we can wonder how India can become a great power in spite of this system.
- On the one hand I’d like to talk about the fact that India is a land of contrasts
- And on the other hand I’d like to explain how India can still become a great power.
I. Land of contrasts
At the first sight we can immediately see that India is a land of contrasts.
- Whereas women [wimen] still wear the traditional outfits, men currently wear t-shirts and jeans and we can see many cities with skyscrapers referring to India on the move.
- Despite the overpopulation, the poverty and the environmental (env[ai]ronmental) problems, India is in a process of rapid economy but social problems still exist.
- The caste system is one of them. This system makes differences between the dalits and the other social classes and no one complains because of the religion and their faith in reincarnation.
- The dalits represent 1/3 of the Indian population and because of the caste system they live in an extreme (extr[i]me) poverty. The higher classes don’t consider them part of the human society and most of them have to find odd jobs like toilet cleaner or scavengers for example.
- The caste system intervenes in marriages [marrige] too. Because the characteristics of the Indian caste system include the practice of marrying only members of the same caste.
- However, with time, things changed and inter caste marriage became a part of the society. Marriages are now regarded as the best means to remove the barrier of caste system.
- But a lot of Indians still use the dowry when their daughters get married.
- They ask for a sum of money that the family of the bride has to pay before the wedding.
- Due to this practice, many poor families decide to practice the sex-selective abortions even if it is illegal [illigoal], because they can’t provide money for the dowry, and girls are thus considered as a burden for their family.
- India is therefore becoming an increasing male-dominated society and in the future, it will lack women.
II. India can still become a great power
- But even if the religion is still really important for Indian people, the majority of Indians are looking for shift in their country.
- Farms are progressively giving way to factories, population is fast-growing and step by step the percentage of poor people is decreasing.
- Indeed, the creation of the microcredit was a complete revolution for India.
- This system that offers the opportunity for extremely poor women to make ends meet is the reason of a growth of 70% annually in the industrial sector.
