PREPARATION FOR MOCK ORAL EXAM
30 minutes preparation + 30 minutes with jury (teacher)
During the preparation:
- become familiar with the documents - read them carefully - organise the information (use highlighters for example)
- prepare questions (→ découverte des besoins) - what’s the first question to get things started? (How may I help you?) - think about the context of your role-play and the questions you need to ask to help the client/visitor.
- greet the person appropriately (words/tone of voice/smile…)
- say goodbye appropriately (have a nice day/enjoy the visit/have a safe trip/bye…)
During the role-play:
- the teacher is the visitor or client and you are the tourism professional
- you have to play the role! Imagine that it is a real-life situation, be professional, polite, enthusiastic, try to help, etc. For example: give a brochure, a map, show a document to the visitor (even if they don’t really exist!) - you can also invent some information, as long as it’s realistic (there is a really good pub down the road, that’s where I always eat, it’s very good)
- if you can, it’s a good idea to include your personal knowledge, something which is not in the documents (maybe you’ve studied or been to the destination, or you’ve read an article about it or an aspect of it)
- very important: do not propose a visit/an attraction at the very beginning of the conversation
After the role-play:
- we will continue with an informal conversation about you (this time the teacher will ask the questions) - e.g. your background, your interests, your travels, your choice of studies… this allows you to speak English on a more familiar subject and to be more spontaneous.
