Assignment 1D (10%)
Instructions
This is your Assignment. You must write your answers in the Answer Booklet and send it to your tutor once it is completed.
Important: You must complete Units 1 to 3 in the Workbook before doing this assignment.
As you can see in the following table, there are two parts to this assignment: speaking and writing. The assignment is marked out of 100 and represents 10% of the final course grade. Part I (Speaking) and Part II (Writing) are each worth 50 marks.
Part | Description | Marks | Context |
I. Speaking [pic 1] | Evaluates your pronunciation, communication and language abilities in a structured speech presented to your tutor on the telephone. | 50 | [pic 2] |
II. Writing [pic 3] | Evaluates content, structure and grammar, with a particular emphasis on your capacity to correctly use grammar structures previously studied in the course (adjectives, capitalization, pronouns, punctuation and subject-verb agreement) and your capacity to use proper revision strategies. | 50 | [pic 4] |
For both the oral and the written tasks, you will find evaluation grids in the Answer Booklet. They show you the specific evaluation criteria your tutor will use and what you will be evaluated on.
Once you have completed the assignment, you must upload the Answer Booklet to the course website so it can be evaluated by your tutor.
Very Important – Please note You must complete the ORAL part of this ASSIGNMENT (the presentation to your tutor on the telephone) before you send the written part to your tutor. |
Part I: Speaking [pic 5]
This part consists of doing an oral presentation to your tutor on the telephone. Carefully read all the instructions that follow and start working on your presentation.
When you are ready to do your oral presentation, contact your tutor by phone or by e-mail to arrange an appointment.
Pre-Speaking
You must interview a professional related to your field of study. If you do not know exactly what profession you want to practise, then interview someone who has a job that interests you or that you have dreamt of having. Do not be shy. You can call up companies and ask to speak to a professional. You could also contact a professional through the Internet (one of our students contacted an anthropologist this way). Most people are happy to speak to a student.
To prepare for this interview, read pages 19 and 20 in Brass Ring 2. First, read the explanation of how to interview someone. Then do the Speaking Activity. You should prepare 15 questions for the interview: some ideas are given to you on page 20 of your textbook.
While you do not have to conduct your interview in English, we recommend that you try to do so as much as possible. However, you must present your findings in English.
To prepare for your presentation of about three- to five-minute to your tutor, read Presentation Form on page 20 in Brass Ring 2.
Make sure your presentation includes the following:
- It explains who the interviewee is.
- It explains what the job is.
- It tells how long the interviewee has been working at the job.
- It tells how you met the interviewee.
- It provides a summary of what the interviewee said and does NOT merely reiterate the questions asked.
- It gives the interviewee’s opinion about the profession.
Before calling your tutor for your presentation,
- in the Answer Booklet, read the Oral Evaluation Grid your tutor will use to evaluate your presentation;
- complete the Speaking Checklist in the Answer Booklet to make sure you have the best presentation possible.
Speaking
Have you answered “yes” to every item in the checklist? No? Then don’t call your tutor yet—you’re not ready. Yes? Okay, you’re ready to make the call.
When your tutor answers, identify who you are, what course you’re taking (604-SAR-FD 60-01) and which assignment you’re doing (1D). Tell your tutor you’re ready to do Part Ii (Speaking).
After your presentation is done, your tutor might ask you some questions. Remember that when you interact with your tutor, you must demonstrate a respectful and open-minded attitude. This will be evaluated.
