Argument Aborsion

Unwanted pregnancy can be extremely stressful for women and abortion has

become a very controversial topic, attracting heated debates whenever discussed.

Depending on your moral, ethnic and religious views, abortion could either be

widely accepted or extensively loathed. Just like the Chinese Ying or Yang, there is

no clear black-and-white view of this issue. However, in my opinion, it is the

freedom of the woman to choose whether to abort their child or not since the

decision will affect the rest of her life and no one should force the decision.

Critics often claim that abortion is murder since life begins at conception, and our

civilized society does not permit one human to intentionally harm another without

punishment, therefore abortion should also be abolished as it is essentially doing

the same thing. However, if we argue that life begins at conception, it should also be

noted that the fertilized eggs used in Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) are human, those who

are not planted are deemed useless and thrown away. If this isn’t considered to be

murder, abortion too is not an act of homicide right? Science has shown that nearly

all abortions take place in the first trimester, the fetus cannot exist individually

without the mother, so theoretically it is not murder. Those opposed to abortion

also insists that abortion could result in medical complications later, there are

higher chances of miscarriage and other pregnancy problems. Moreover, pro-life

advocates state that abortion has been used as a form of contraception and many

women who chose abortion were young women without sufficient life to fully

understand the permanent consequences of their actions, and they often end up

having lifelong regret about it.

There are also claims that abortion is frequently linked to severe stress and

physiological pain. Additionally, advocates of adoption claim that it is a viable

alternative option to abortion, many a family are placed on waiting lists for years

hoping to get a child to complete their family. Opponents of abortion also maintains

that for women who demand complete control over their body, they should prevent

the risk of unwanted pregnancy through the careful use of contraception, or even

abstinence if contraception is not available.

Even though there is a small degree of risk, abortion is a very safe and harmless

procedure. According to WHO (World Health Organization) 88% of the woman who

had an abortion did it in their first trimester and medical abortion has 0.5% less risk

of serious difficulties and does not affect a women’s health and her reproductive
