PART I - Written comprehension
1) This document is an article from The New York Times published on October 8 in 2011. The topic of this document is the comparison of two famous people, Steve Jobs and Edison.
2) In the first pararaph the author compares the two men because the have a lot of common point and because when they died they received a great tribute.
3) Both of them dropped out of schcool, they « had less formal shcooling than most of their respective peers ». They also « possessed the ability tovisualize projects on a grand scale » and they had the business feeling : they « followed an inner voice when making decisions ». They also both had a « terrific temper » which scared their employees.
4) They both worked in several product areas but technology area was the major, Steve Jobs created « Apple computers » and Edison invented the phonograph. « Both men worked in several products areas, but entertainment related technlogy was a major portion…. »
5) Steve Jobs and Edison have both succeeded but their careers have been different. Steve Jobs created his product, marketed it and managed the scale of his success. Moreover he was passionate unlike Edison who quickly lost interest in his product that could have mad him millions but the business was not in his blood.
6) Steve Jobs was smart because he made a fortune with his product unlike Edison. « the most beloved billionaire the world has ever known »
Edison is a genius because he invented the phonograph « world’s greatest inventor »
Steve Jobs is humble because even with success he has kept his values and has always been loved.
Edison was a bad money manager because he could have made a fortune with his invention. « world’s worst businessman »
Steve Jobs was adored because of his career and great success in life, he inspires millions of people. « make a difference in the world »
Edison was a magician because with him, « the public thought of the Wizard, an outsize persona, through which it was impossible to see an actual person ».
7) People remember Edison as a magician who is a genius and who is the « world’s greatest inventor » when Steve Jobs is remembered as a man like any other, who has weaknesses, who has already failed in his professional career but who inspiring peoples.
PART II- Written Expression
I think there are many reasons why people spend a lot of time at work. First of all, there are those who love what they do and whose work is not a chore but rather a passion. They are surrounded by people with whom the work is going well and they found what they liked to do, such as a doctor or a professional football player. There are also people who are forced to spend a lot of time working, these people have to support their families or they need to earn more money to live. Finally, I think there are also people who dream of succeeding, climbing the ladder of the place where they work and the only way to get there is to work
