Plastic pollution: how does it affect our health?
Intro: Plastic pollution can have significant and often unnoticed effects on human health. This is because many animal species that we consume have ingested microplastics, which can accumulate in their digestive tracts. As a result, these microplastics can enter our bodies and cause detrimental impacts on our health. In addition, the annual global production of plastic currently runs to more than eight hundred billion pounds.
The term plastic comes from the Greek word plastikos meaning capable of being shaped or molded. These materials are organic and composed of carbon atoms. Due to its moldable and/or plastic character, it has become the preferred modern manufacturing material.
Summary:
I)Types of plastics and chemicals
Plastics are classified by different properties here are the most devastating examples.
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is commonly used for water bottles and food packaging but can release antimony and aromatic hydrocarbons.
Polystyrene, commonly used in cups and packages, releases harmful chemicals including styrene.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is commonly used in pipes and for certain types of food packaging. However, it has the potential to release chlorine.
II)Contamination of the food chain by micro-plastics
Awareness of the dangers of microplastics has become crucial due to the irreversible damage they cause to the environment.
Organisms absorb microplastics through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact; these chemicals have negative health effects, such as chronic inflammation and cancer. Evidence shows that microplastics have a detrimental impact on marine life, leading to a decline in the reproduction of marine species and consequently affecting the quality of our food. Additionally, microplastics can contain toxic compounds and metals that can cause further damage to the environment.
Contamination of the food chain is a growing problem due to microplastics from plastic waste in water and ecosystems.
So, what is microplastic?
Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are often invisible to the naked eye. They come from the degradation of large pieces of plastic used in certain products such as cosmetics or clothing. These little plastic tips can be found in water, air, and even food.
Terrestrial and aquatic animals ingest microplastics, which enter the food chain. Plastics may also contaminate agricultural soils, affecting crops, and can release harmful chemicals when in contact with food.
As a result, humans may unintentionally ingest microplastics by consuming contaminated food products, raising concerns about long-term effects on human health.
III)Effects on the health
Hormonal disturbances: Exposure to plastics can cause hormonal imbalances that interfere with reproductive health. It's crucial to be aware of this issue and take steps to minimize exposure to such chemicals.
Cancer risks: some plastics contain potentially carcinogenic compounds. Long-term exposure to these substances may increase the risk of certain types of cancer.
