Sport and politics are closely linked. The use of politics in sport can have both positive and negative impacts on sporting events and on society in general. So, we will examine the different ways in which politics can be used in sport, as well as its impacts.
First of all, sports events are often used to promote positive values such as equality, tolerance and inclusion or to fight against racism and discrimination of the LGBT community. Governments can use sports events to show their support for these values by putting in place policies to combat discrimination and by organizing sports events that reflect these values. For example, the "No Room for Racism" campaign in the Premier League to combat racial discrimination, which is sometimes experienced by players such as Marcus Rashford or Raheem Sterling.
In addition, governments can also use the policy to boycott sports events that do not correspond to their values or that are organized in countries that do not respect human rights. For example, many countries boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics because of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. This led to a boycott of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles by the USSR as a response.
Finally, governments can use politics to promote the organization of major sporting events such as the Olympic Games or the World Cup of soccer. These events can have positive economic benefits for the host country and can also help to reinforce the country's position on the international stage. For example, the 2022 Football World Cup, which was held in Qatar, was an opportunity for the country to reinforce its image on the international stage and boost its economy. But some countries do not hesitate to use all possible means to get the opportunity to organize these events. Indeed, Qatar is accused of having paid bribes in order to obtain the privilege of organizing the Football World Cup.
In conclusion, the use of politics in sport can have both positive and negative impacts. While politics can be used to promote positive values and to organize large-scale sporting events, it can also be used to influence the decision to award a competition to a country or to boycott sporting events. Ultimately, sport should remain a place where people can come together and celebrate their shared passion, without politics interfering with this spirit of camaraderie and fair play.
