United Kingdom, Great Britain and the Commonwealth

Great Britain and the United Kingdom are not the same thing and it is important to differentiate them.

First of all, the geographical term Great Britain is used to talk about the island formed by England, Wales and Scotland.

Then, the United Kingdom is the term designating the grouping of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. All these countries have a different capital: London for England, Edinburgh for Scotland, Cardiff for Wales and Belfast for Northern Ireland. At the political level, they also function differently since each country has its own parliament. However, the United Kingdom only has one and the same monarch (Charles III) and one and the same prime minister, who is currently Richi Sunak.

the United Kingdom is a parliamentary monarchy, and it is legislative elections that determine seats in the House of Commons. The composition of the House of Lords is determined by indirect suffrage, appointment or heredity.

The United Kingdom also has many small islands such as the Hebrides, Shetland and Orcades, which form an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean located northwest of mainland Europe.

Finally, you should know that the United Kingdom is part of the Commonwealth, which is an intergovernmental organization created in 1926, and formalized by the London Declaration of 1949. It currently has 56 members and brings together former territories of the British Empire, who had decided to unite by pledging allegiance to the British crown.

Charles III succeeds his mother Elizabeth II and becomes head of the Commonwealth and the secretary general is Patricia Scotland. A large part of the Commonwealth is located on African territory since the organization has 21 African countries. Then, the population of the Commonwealth is quite young since 60% of the organization's population is under 30 years old. The Commonwealth is celebrated every year on the second Monday of March

To finish, the objective of the Commonwealth is to promote a series of values such as equality, non-discrimination, democracy, human rights, but also sustainable development and environmental protection. Its members are therefore brought together by the strength of these values, as well as the English language and culture.

However, some states no longer wish to join the Commonwealth, believing that it is in reality only a legacy of British colonization.
