SOCIAL NETWORKING AND BUSINESS COMMUNICATION PEDAGOGY: PLUGGING INTO THE FACEBOOK GENERATION

Dr. Marilyn A. Dyrud

Marilyn Dyrud is a full professor in the communication department at Oregon institute of Technology, where she has been teaching since 1976. She is active in various professional organizations. In the American society for Engineering Education, she serves on two division boards (engineering ethics and engineering technology) and is a regular presenter in the engineering ethics division. She has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed proceedings and journals, has given 125 presentations, and serves as manuscript reviewer for six journals.

The author Marilyn Dyrud observed that the past years an important prevalence of social networks such as Facebook. Theses networks spreads around the world a lot of information about politics, economics etc such as the death of Osama Bin Laden. She realized that it represents an information and communication tool really consequent for people. Students spend a lot of time on social networks during their class. The author shows how social networking is becoming an important tool in Education and that people have to adapt their system to these new technologies. In fact, we can observe that e-mails will one day really disappear from Internet and e-mails in social networks will replace them. Networks are becoming an important phenomenon.

According to the author, something important is happening that is dramatically affecting how we communicate and interrelate.

We clearly observe that these new generations are becoming symbiotic with their computer. Social networks are literally changing our lives. It changes our way to think and communicate. Nowadays, students spend most of their time on Internet while they are in class. Due to this phenomenon, many university teachers created e-learning platforms to simplify the learning course and enable student to interact. Moreover, it enables an interaction between the teacher and the student. I have already seen when I worked in London, teachers that films their course and linked it on the platform.

To check the verifiability of its hypothesis, the author, as a communication teacher, offers different issues that can enhance the business communication classroom. The author used different methods to show how the use of social networks in teaching was powerful. They developed Facebook internships, a promotion campaign using Facebook, twitter and Youtube. They observed that the different students were more motivated through this and that they felt needed. The results in class and their involvement increased.

As a conclusion, in this article the author, Marilyn Dyrud explain through different examples how social networks such as Facebook, represent the new way of communication. It is a tool of every day life, thus the government should reengineer the educational process.
