Should women celebrate 50 years’ improvement at work or should they still be complaining about inequalities?
Women had always worked but they never practiced the same jobs than the men. At first, they worked at home, they were housewife, taking care of their children and looking after their household tasks. Then, they began to have some little jobs, acting in the textile industry or as seller in shop but they were always working in the shadow of their husband. After the seventeen’s, women began to be more independent, and the more the time passed away, the more their working conditions were improving. So we can wonder if the women should celebrate 50 years’ improvements at work or if they should continue to complain about inequalities. .
First, why can we say that the working condition for women had evolved since 50 years?
In fact, during the 20th century the women’s works have grown. Now they enter the world workforce in great number. Before, women were excluded of the labor market, then, when they were accepted their labor conditions were often not really good. But everything has evolved.
A lot of rights for women have been passed like the Equal Pay pacts in 1970 in the UK. Also, laws about sex discrimination, which consists of protect the discrimination for the employment, have been erected in 1975. The goal of all these different laws was, for the men and the women, to be on an equal footing. For a while, women had manifested a lot about their rights and the inequalities. And hopefully, now women can be executive (ie the chief executive of the London Stock exchange is a woman).
Moreover, this evolution has permitted to improve their life quality. Indeed, now they can be independent, when they have their own salary. They have now hardware independence, so if they divorce they can live on their own. They can raise their children alone. They did not depend on their husband anymore. More, they now have the same access than men to the studies, school, and university. They can do long study, so have an access to the same job as men. More and more women have a high hierarchical level in the work.
Plus, a lot of law has been erected to facilitate the work of mother for the women. In fact, they can continue to work after childbirth due to childcares facilities. They can employ nanny, they also can have maternity allowances. And there are laws which prohibit boss to fired women who are pregnant.
Unfortunately, if progress has been made as regards parity, there is still a gap between male and female at work.
It is a matter of fact; despite of all the progress which has been made, inequalities remain in the labor market.
And despite all the law, sexual discrimination still remains. Today, there is not equal pay or equal opportunity between women and men. For instance, their earnings fell twice than the men during the crisis but they have charge higher for insurance. The rate of unemployment is higher for the women than for the men. The women are still less paid than the men for the same job.
Moreover, the employers have prejudice about women because they are said physically and psychologically less strong than the men. Furthermore, employers rather not employed women because they can have children. They devote
