As power engineers acquire their second and first class power engineering certification, they find that their roles and areas of responsibility require them to have a more detailed working knowledge of the key engineering codes and standards with which their facility must comply. Power engineers often work on teams or lead teams that are responsible for upgrades within their facilities and/or for making changes to major pressure piping or equipment. Although power engineers are not required to design a boiler or pressure vessel, they often work as team members for equipment design, upgrade, process change, commissioning, operation, or repair. These activities require work to be done in accordance with applicable codes. As well, when you become chief engineer of a facility, you may be called upon to lead teams and give approval for various projects that must comply with specific engineering codes and standards. In the early 1900’s, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) appointed various committees to draw up standards for the construction of boilers and pressure vessels together with standards for welding and guidelines for the care of boilers in service.
