Orientalisme, Saïd

Saïd explique dans son oeuvre Orientalism les origines de la situation coloniale. L’Orientalisme a, selon lui, établi les fondements de la culture coloniale. Il définit l’Orientalisme comme: a manner of regularized ( or Orientalized ) writing, vision, and study, dominated by imperatives, perspectives, and ideological ostensibly suited to the Orient . Depuis la fin du dix-huitième siècle, beaucoup d’écrivains, comme Flaubert, Vigny, Nerval, Burton et Lane, sont partis en voyage en Orient. Ils ont décrit ces voyages dans leurs œuvres littéraires. Saïd fait une différence entre les écrivains anglais et français. Le pouvoir anglais était à cette époque déjà relativement stable dans les colonies. La situation française, par contre, était moins stable. Il décrit la situation française comme :

Consequently French pilgrims from Volney planned and projected for, imagined, ruminated about places that were principally in their minds ; they constructed schemes for a typical French, perhaps even European, concert in the Orient. […] Theirs was the Orient of memories, suggestive ruins, forgotten secrets, hidden correspondences, and an almost virtuosic style of being, an Orient, whose highest literary forms would be found in Nerval and Flaubert, both of whose work was solidly fixed in an imaginative, unrealizable ( except aesthetical ) dimension .
