A large number of children live in orphanages or spend the day in shelters because their parents who have different illnesses such as HIV/AIDS cannot care for them or because they try to get a meagre salary to feed their children.Today, AIDS is still one of the leading causes of death in Thailand. According to UN estimates on AIDS in 2015, approximately 440,000 people are living with HIV in Thailand.

Mercy Center is an association that works by helping the children and communities of the many slums of Bangkok. They build and operate schools for children in need, improve family health and welfare by providing them medicine and food by the same occasion. The association fights for protecting street children’s rights, combat the AIDS crisis and their schools take in children with HIV to ensure that they receive the care and treatment they need. Mercy Center provides shelters for orphans and homeless children, and for people living with AIDS including adults.

What we plan to do : As volunteers, we could help in the day-to-day running of the centre to prepare meals, feed the children, clean the house, care for orphans with disabilities or assist local teachers and pass share our knowledge and experience to children around 4 to 6 years old by for example to plan a discovery workshop in France, to share where we come from and so that they can get to know us better.

Personal reasons : I am committed to volunteering for this association because I believe that interaction with humanitarian volunteers is essential for these children, as well as the affection and attention we will give them. The moments spent with between us will never be forgotten, and I hope, will bring them greater self-esteem.

By volunteering in Mercy Center, I aspire join the cause that many orphanages are fighting for which is : improving the living conditions of children. After visiting the Mercy Center orphanage in the Klong Toey neighbourhood, I met people with a common goal: to give a better day to the children who need it. We were very well received by friendly people and it made me want to share their mission, even if for a day. We had the opportunity to meet two women, garment embroiderers whose purpose is to sell these clothes in order to raise funds for the association. They seemed to be passionate about their work and proud of it. I would like to be able to help them with the little means I have, my will, and the little experience I may have.

In orphanages the children are all fed and housed, but, unfortunately, I am aware that not all facilities can provide access to health care for orphans. As volunteers, we can play an essential role in their development, in addition to playing daily with them, we can give them attention and love, convinced of the importance of solidarity and sharing, for a better and more humane world.
