Introduction
Motivation is neither a personality trait context dependent nor a quasi-automatic consequence of good management or adequate organization. This is the re sultanate economic, organizational, technological and cultural constraints, and their interactions with the needs, values and aspirations of individuals. The motivation is not a stable process, it is constantly challenged. To understand the process that is the motivation, it is necessary to give a precise and concrete description, to support strategies to develop it. It is therefore important to involve theoretical and practical approaches. Taylor thought the motivation born of the financial incentives and due do its job. History has proven the failure of this reasoning. Since understanding the mechanisms has evolved primarily in three areas:
Models of Hierarchy of needs by Maslow, Motivators by Herzberg, Theory X and Y by McGregor or Likert are far too sketchy and partial to account for a complex reality.
It is impossible to find a method of reasoning that applies to all persons, firms situations and cultures. The risk of failure is great if we apply a method without thinking, just because it has worked elsewhere.
Models modelled on animal behaviour, according to which the specific needs drive us to act in a certain way rather than sitting idle, are poor when it comes to understanding the behaviour of people at work.
