In recent years, several natural disasters have occurred all over the world. In this text, I will only talk about a natural disaster that happens in Quebec in the 1990s. During the weekend of July 18 to 21, 1996, a major flood occurred in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. People impacted by the flood lived their worst nightmare. The question asked by everybody was: What really happened during this tragic weekend? A weather system coming from the southern Ontario had developed rapidly. In just 24 hours, the system looked like a fall storm and had moved towards the Quebec borders. The rainfall amount was impressive and wind gusts were very strong. It was reported that the amount of water might have varied from 100 to 275 millimeters. Flooding has caused the evacuation of thousands of people. The whole town was affected by this tragedy. People no longer had electricity and it was difficult to get food because the flood destroyed everything. Moreover, the disaster caused several injuries, people missing and some deaths. It was estimated that damages caused by the flood may have been near 8 million dollars. The people were wondering what they could have done to avoid this disaster. Authorities could not have prevented this, since it happened so fast. Some people lost their home and/or a family member during this tragic weekend. At the time of this disaster, a lot of people in the province of Quebec asked themselves what they would have done in such a terrible situation. If this would happen to me, I would try to survive and put my efforts in rebuilding my house. Moreover, I would try to help people around me because after all we are a community and we must help each other. Is there something that can be done to prevent future flooding? It might be a good idea to invest a large amount of money in infrastructure of the cities that are at risk. The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean has followed this suggestion by investing 170 million dollars for the construction of a reservoir that helps to stabilize the river.
