Choir Boy Critique
In our society, race has become an issue that a lot of people care about. They seem to be more conscious about how they approach that social problem. In the play Choir Boy, a group of young black man make it through the school year even with their own issues. In the following text, I will introduce the play, resume it, give my opinion and recommend it.
First, I went to see the play Choir Boy on October 28, 2018 at 2:00 PM. Written by Tarell Alvin McCraney and directed by Mike Payette, the characters were played by Patrick Abellard, Vlad Alexis, Quincy Armorer, Steven Charles, Lyndz Dantiste, Christopher Parker and Paul Rainville.
Second, this play tells the story of boys from the choir of the Charles R. Drew Prep School. Pharus, the main character, gets reprimanded by Headmaster Marrow at the beginning for ruining the performance of the schools anthem at the graduation ceremony because he stopped when someone whispered gay slurs to him, presumably Bobby, the Headmasters nephew. The rest of the play is mostly the boys arguing over choir issues and Pharus’ sexuality.
Third, in my opinion, the piece was really good because it addressed issues such as race and homosexuality without being too overpowering. The characters were all black mans, appart from Mr. Pendleton, which is a rare thing to see so I enjoyed seeing them represented as powerful individuals. The fact that the main character, Pharus, was gay was also a great thing to see because it means that it is being more and more accepted by people.
Fourth, I would definitely recommend the piece because it can appeal to everyone. It has a very nice meaning and even though it was a bit long, it was not boring at all. The characters were not too young and not too old which is great because different people can identify with the actors roles. In addition to this, the only thing I would improve would surely be the length of the play because some parts felt a bit useless in my opinion so it would affect it.
In conclusion, the actors were all great in the individual roles and as a group in general. The story included important social issues such as homophobia and black man’s being represented so much. I would recommend the play to people of all ages. In the future, more directors should take example of this piece and cast more diverse people.
