Africa is one of the continents most affected by famine. It is particularly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa and the Horn of Africa, a northeastern part of the continent composed of Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. We also observe that the Sahel, Madagascar or Afghanistan, are countries known as «food insecurity».

°Definition of famine:

Famine represents the almost total lack of food resources in a country for a long time and which leads to the death of the populations concerned.

This is the highest level of food insecurity, both in terms of magnitude and severity. It occurs when a substantial number of people die of hunger or a combination of undernourishment and disease.

If more than 20% of households cannot feed themselves, the rate of malnutrition exceeds 30% and deaths multiply, we are talking about ‘famine’.

However, there is no internationally accepted definition of this term. This is why the mere reference to this concept often leads to debates on whether the situation in question can be qualified as such.

°Which African countries are most affected by famine?

Somalia is one of the countries most severely affected by famine according to the UN. The emergency is vital and the NGOs present there are unable to cope with the situation. In question, the historic drought that persists throughout the country.

In Somalia, as in many African countries, climate is one of the main causes of this food shortage. Indeed, the areas most affected by food crises are areas of great drought. At the same time, we must add politically unstable situations, conflicts and civil wars as well as particularly unstable conditions in terms of security for the populations.

This struggle began between 1983 and 1984 when famine in Ethiopia was shown on TV for the first time. For the first time in the history of television, tragedies and dead people are unveiled to the public thus shocking the whole world, especially the artists who then decided at that time to join forces and fight against this scourge. Thanks to their popularity, they manage to set up a committee of stars sharing the same ideas. A thousand fans follow their idols. By their power they organized a giant concert called LIVE-AID concert to raise funds.

Today, despite the considerable technological advances of our time that allow us to evolve in medicine and in many other fields, nothing allows us to fight against the biggest global problem that is famine. Nowadays it is absolutely not normal that urgent problems such as this persistent
