When the Europeans first discovered America in the 15th century, it led to centuries of conflict between the settlers and the indigenous people who lived on this discovered land. These people are now refered to as the Native Americans or American Indians. These Native Americans don’t represent just one group or entity. When North America was discovered, it is believed that it was settled by over 500 different tribes who did not speak the same languages and had many differences. These Natives came from Eurasia about 12‘000 years ago when there was a land bridge between Eurasia and North America. The land bridge was then flooded and North America could not be reached by land anymore. This is why until the discovery of the Americas nobody knew of the Native Americans.
West, in the 19th century, resulted in a long series of conflicts between the natives and the settlers.1
During this Maturity Work, I’am going to concentrate on the Western Native American tribes during the 19th century. This includes the Native tribes of the Great Basin, the Great Plains and other Western tribes. These American Indians saw many white settlers arrive on their land during the 19th century. Therefore how did these different tribes react to the arrival of the settlers on their land ? What changes did this migration cause to their lifestyle ?
Up to the 20th century there were a lot of struggles between the settlers and the Natives. The whites had to deal with the Natives. Thus, what did the whites do with what they called the ‘Indian Problem’ ?
