Achille Delcourt
1ère C.
We called him “The Old Lion”. Prime Minister from 1940 to 45, he was an iconic figure, famous for his cigars, his speeches and his unwavering determination. He has often been said to be the British equivalent of General de Gaulle, so he turned out to be an astonishing warlord. This tribute is paid in honor to Winston Churchill, the former head of the British government during World War II, who died just 50 years ago. Wasn't Churchill a very good prime minister? Indeed, it is first of all the exceptional figure of an irreducible fighter who knew how to embody with panache the will to resistance of a country and an entire people, but he was above all a very human person. It was he who, in a founding speech of resistance to the Nazis, claimed that he had nothing more to offer than blood, pain and tears in the service of a single goal, victory.

When Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, Churchill expressed his distrust. He becomes his fiercest opponent. Pacifist but yet a supporter of rearmament, Churchill remained isolated for a long time in a country where Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain advocated a policy of appeasement towards Hitler. But when war broke out in 1939, once again First Lord of the Admiralty, it was Churchill that King George VI called for a government of national unity. (Part of Luna) If Churchill led England to victory, he is also remembered for his famous speeches and quotes. His phrasing and verbal attacks were also Churchill's weapons. This talented diplomat, also a confirmed painter, and Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953 for the publication of his Memoirs.
Churchill was not perfect in every way. He made a few mistakes on the course. He was a very human person who could easily understand a soldier, scientist or expert. Would the victory of World War II have taken place without Churchill? ; Could Charles de Gaulle have recovered France? 50 years later, it can therefore be said that he now holds a very special place in the heart of the nation.
Winston Churchill died on January 24, 1965, at the age of 90, from a severe stroke. His funeral saw one of the largest gatherings of statesmen in the world. Throughout the year, several exhibitions across Europe honor Winston Churchill, such as the one presented by the Musée de l'Armée in Paris or the one offered by the London Science Museum which notably presents a bust in bronze of the former British Prime Minister. Today, more than fifty years after this moment of history, it is all the French people, our people, who are delighted to offer this exemplary figure the place of honor which is due to him in Paris. Thus, a few steps from that of Clémenceau, whom he admired, the statue of Churchill, which we owe to the talent of Jean Cardot, like that of General de Gaulle in London, inaugurated five years ago by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, what these two men did together to change the course of history.
