In what ways did Martin Luther King change human rights in the U.S.?

I. Civil Rights in USA

We will see in this part a chronology of the evolution of civil rights in the USA:

- In 1776 there was the Declaration of Independence

- In 1861 the Civil War led to the abolition of slavery

- In 1957 The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was created to fight for civil rights chaired by Martin Luther King

- In 1957 segregation in schools was abolished

- In 1963 there was the March on Washington for civil rights, Martin Luther King made his speech I Have a Dream.

- In 1964 the Adoption of the Civil Rights Act prohibiting all forms of segregation in public places

- In 1968: Martin Luther King was assassinated

II. The anti-racial movement to defend human rights by Martin Luther King

After the abolition of slavery in 1865, African Americans continued to suffer racial segregation, imposing a legal practice to live "separate but equal. ». Martin Luther King was a pacifist defender of human rights, equality and peace. He strived all his life fighting for equality between blacks and whites in the United States. He organized and led non- violent asking marches, for the right to vote, desegregation, essential freedoms for African- American people.

Discrimination is the fact of treating less favorably certain groups of people because of race, color, religion, language, gender or culture.

In 1965, the UN adopted the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination

“I have a dream” is the popular name given to the historic public speech by Martin Luther King when he spoke of his desire for a future where blacks and whites would coexist harmoniously as equal. King’s delivery of the speech during the march on Washington for jobs and freedom was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement. The speech is often considered to be one of the greatest speeches in history and was ranked the top American speech of the 20th century.
