Places and Exchanges In Ireland

Introduction

I'm going to talk about the notion Places and Exchanges in Ireland. This notion can show the links between one space and the different exchanges.

We can talk about the population that is one of the main actor of exchanges which are constituted by the immigration and the emigration. As we know, historyis composed of waves of immigration because of political and economic motives. Irish immigration is one of the most famous immigration.

How has Irelands economy impacted on migration ?

First we will deal with the past from 1845 to 1990. Then, we'll show the impact of the boom from 1995 to 2007. We will finish with the recession since 2008.

I- From 1845 to 1990

1845---> The great famine : huge waves of immigration to England, USA and Australia.

Emigrant Journey painted by Bernard Canavan : On the first panel we can see people who are praying, maybe to be protected by God, they must want better living conditions. Indeed, they look poor and miserable. On the second panel, we notice people fleeing the country, they must be escaping from their poor countryside because of war and bad living conditions They go very lighty, thatproves that they have nothing left. They're going to England.

The 20th Century ---> ''the sorry decade'' in 1950's with unemployment very present there, people were hopeless and thought they wouldn't have a future in Ireland. They moved to England and practiced manual jobs.

Before the boom, life was very hard, it was a period of recession, there used to be no hope in finding a job.

II- Celtic Tiger- from 1995 to 2007

New horizons for the Irish people, half of the population of Ireland was very young and earned lot of money thanks to the tax breats and the foreign investments.

---> Life in Dublin : very likely, people spent lot of time having parties and spending their money. Irish immigrants came back in order to find a job as we can see in the text :

Death of the Celtic Tiger : Eoin, a fifty years old irishman, used to work in Germany, he lives now in Dublin with his family. He has an opportunity to give a good education to his son thanks to various Universities, where people can succeed in different kind of jobs.

---> Dublin became a place of hight standart of living. This multicultural and trendy city is getting more and more modern.

The text Coming Back Home : the foreigners also came to work in Ireland : Leanne, an australian tourist, decided to stay so she could start a new life.

III- Since 2008- The Irish bust

The American financial crisis in 2007 ---> Called the ''subprime crisis'' it was a global economic crisis.

The two graphs : the first one underlines an unemployment rate increasing that reached 13 percent in 2010. the second graph shows the ''property bubble'' that is created when house prices rise dramatically
