FREE WILL AND IDENTITY IN MATRIX (DESCARTES)

In this presentation, we will explore the concepts of free will and identity in the film Matrix, based on Descartes' quote "I think therefore I am". We will analyze how these concepts are represented in the film and how they relate to the perception of the main characters. Finally, we will conclude by summarizing our main ideas and explaining how they relate to Descartes' quote.

In the film Matrix, the concept of free will is closely related to the concept of reality. The characters in the film are confronted with the question of whether they really have the power to make decisions and control their own destiny, or whether they are merely pawns in a larger game. In the Matrix, reality is controlled by machines, which have created a simulated world to keep humans in a state of artificial sleep. The characters in the film must therefore ask themselves whether they really have the power to make decisions or whether they are simply puppets in a simulated world.

The concept of identity is also important in The Matrix. Characters must ask themselves who they really are and whether they have an identity separate from the one imposed on them by the Matrix.

In the film, the characters are confronted with the question of whether they are really human beings or simply computer programs. This question is particularly important for the main character, Neo, who must ask himself whether he is really the "Chosen One" who has been prophesied or whether he is simply another program in the Matrix.

Ultimately, the concept of free will and identity in the Matrix is closely tied to the question of reality.

This question is closely related to the quote from Descartes, who suggests that the ability to think is proof of one's existence. Indeed, René Descartes was born in 1596 and died 1650. He was a French mathematician, scientist and philosopher. He was born and raised in France, but traveled extensively around Europe and spent most of his working life in the Dutch Republic.

We will be interested in the quote from Descartes : “I think, therefore I am”

A clearer translation of Descartes definitive statement might be, "I am thinking, therefore I exist."

Descartes assures himself of his own existence. According to him, it is impossible to doubt the existence of your own thoughts, because in the act of doubting, you are thinking.

In the Matrix, the characters must therefore ask themselves whether they really exist if they cannot think or make independent decisions.

Descartes' quote " think therefore I am" is an affirmation of the existence of the individual as a thinking being. That is the difference that he proposes between the man and the animal.

Neo is a character who has been freed from the Matrix and discovered the truth about his existence. For Neo, the discovery of the truth and the ability to choose his own destiny are essential to his free will and identity. Neo believes that every individual has the ability to choose their own destiny and free themselves from the Matrix.

For Neo, free will is the ability to choose his own path and decide his own destiny.

Agent Smith, on the other hand, is a computer program that was created to maintain order in the Matrix. For Agent Smith, the notion of free will is an illusion created by humans to justify their existence. Agent Smith sees each individual as simply a computer program that follows a set of pre-determined rules.
