What is a subculture ?

is a group of people within a larger culture that differentiates itself from the larger culture to which it belongs. Such people may share same religious, political or scientific beliefs. Sometimes a culture may be represented in the form of where people live. For instance we have the American culture. There are so many subcultures in America, we have hip hop culture, high culture , hacker , video gamer, skater, skin head, it would take us a day to present it all.

We’ll take it step by step.

subcultures have distinct characteristics : every cultural group displays distinct characteristics. No two subcultures are alike. Each subculture is distinct values, behaviors, folkways and more.

Let us take for example the hip-hop and the funk which are both native of the african-American culture. Each of them have their dress code, their way to live , to talk. They are unique the one like the other

some subculture may have a negative lifestyle: some subcultures are known for their negative relations with others in the workplace or other place. They are seen as negative influences by the larger groups because they dont’ conform to the society, and they are not class conscious. I choose to show thugs but they are also other subculture like Amish. they’re known for simple living, plain dress, and reluctance to adopt many conveniences of modern technology.

subculture may have different orientation : there are groups of sexual subcultures that don’t have same sexuel life as the rest. There also sexuel preferences which don’t necessarily tend to be common such as Polyamory and Paraphilia. Might be some people whom love sexual relations with inanimate objets or dead bodies.

some subculture are recognizable by their ethnocentrism : subcultures have the tendency to believe their culture is superior over other cultures. Most of them believe their own beliefs, styles, and the way of life is better than the rest. For example here we have The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), or simply "the Klan", is the name of three distinct past and present movements in the United States that have advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy, white nationalism, anti-immigration, and, especially in later iterations, Nordicism, anti-Catholicism, and antisemitism. We have also The Nation of Islam is an African American political and religious movement, founded in Detroit, Michigan, United States, by Wallace D. Fard Muhammad on July 4, 1930.Its stated goals are to improve the spiritual, mental, social, and economic condition of African Americans in the United States and all of humanity. Critics have described the organization as being black supremacist and antisemitic.

certain subcultures can already be seen as a form of cultural protest against mainstream culture, but they can also be associated with more political formes of protest against maintrstream politics. For example, in the 1960s in african american community , Black Panther Party was created and joined the armed struggle for the defense african-american’s rights, and the hippie subculture joined forces with the anti-war movement against Vietnam War.
