Good Morning my name is Lauriane,

And I’m here to talk about a subject about one of the most powerful women in the world. To start, I would like to share this quote with you “My thing is : do it. You want to see the changes ? Then get out there and make them yourself”. This is a quote from the famous Oprah Winfrey in an article from telegraph.co.uk by  Jane Mulkerrins and published on May,13 2017. Everyone knows this woman as a great TV presenter who also created her own TV channel a few years ago , OW Network, but this article shows us who exactly Oprah is beyond her job as a TV presenter. Winfrey has not only a moving history about her past but in particular she has a very great generosity, not hesitating, for example, to defend women's rights but more particularly African-American culture. In this case, we may wonder “How can we say that women like Oprah Winfrey are examples or role models for our society today or  even in the years to come? ”. To be able to answer that, first of all I'll be talking about her incredible story to show you what she went through in order to become the women she is today and another woman introduced by Winfrey  where she decided to share her story as shown in the article. And finally, we will finish by looking at another famous woman as philanthropic as Winfrey, Michelle OBAMA.

To begin this first part, I would like to tell you a little bit about Oprah Winfrey's story, in order to make you understand what kind of woman she really is and why she is appreciated by almost the whole world. According to the journalist, Oprah was born on 1954 in Mississippi in rural poverty, to a single mother, Vernita Lee, who was a housemaid.  Growing up, she thought her father was Vernon Winfrey, working as a miner, When Oprah was born, he was in the army. Later, she would have lived with her grandmother, in deplorable conditions of poverty, that she was forced to go to school with a potato bag as a dress. Then to his father's house, Vernon Winfrey in Nashville, Tennessee. Jane Mulkerrins also points out that she had a much more severe childhood than one marked by poverty. Indeed, Oprah revealed in 1986 on a show that she had been raped by one of her cousins at 9 years old, but also by two other members of her family.  Through one of her assaults, she became pregnant at 14 years old, but her son died at birth. But fortunately, Winfrey didn't have all the misfortunes of her youth. At school, she flourished, excelling particularly in speech and drama, and was awarded a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. She also received a beauty award at 17 years old, and was hired by a Nashville radio station, during her graduate studies, to read the news part-time.

The article shows us that her next job led her to the story of Henrietta Lacks, whose Winfrey decided to share the story, in order to show the struggle that African-American women can endure. She decided to share her story by spinning a film about her in which she plays the main role as Henrietta's daughter.Henrietta was born in 1920 and she died in 1951 of a very rapidly developing cancerous tumor. Before her dead, she undergone many medical examinations. But during that time, two samples of his cells were taken without his consent, which led to a shipment of cells called HeLa ( in reference to Henrietta Lacks). Several years after her death, a foundation was created to financially support his descendants, who live in poverty and have no social protection, while Henrietta's cells have made the fortune of some health professionals.
