The Great Gatsby

I am going to talk about The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2013.

Story : The story in set in spring 1922. The time is propitious for the relaxation of morals, the rise of jazz and the enrichment of alcohol smugglers... Apprentice writer, Nick Carraway leaves the Middle-West region to settle in New York. Wanting his share of the American dream, he now lives surrounded by a mysterious millionaire, Jay Gatsby, who is distracted by social parties, and his cousin Daisy and her fickle husband, Tom Buchanan, of noble blood. This is how Nick finds himself at the heart of the fascinating world of billionaires, their illusions, their loves and their lies.

Characters :

Jay Gatsby played by Leonardo DiCaprio is a fabulously wealthy young man living in a Gothic mansion in the fictional town of West Egg, New York, in the 1920s. He is famous for the lavish parties he throws every Saturday night, but no one knows where he comes from, what he does, and how he made his fortune.

Nick Carraway played by Tobey Maguire the narrator of the novel and we also follow his own story in this book. He is a young man, originally from Minnesota (Middle West), who settled in New York as a stockbroker. He is honest and tolerant, loves literature. He often serves as a confidant and becomes involved in Gatsby's life, who becomes a true friend.

Daisy Buchanan played by Carey Mulligan is a distant cousin of Nick and is the wife of Tom Buchanan. She is beautiful and rich, courted by many officers including Gatsby. She is attached to her life of luxury, but does not seem happy in her married life with her husband Tom. She appears cold and distant.

Tom Buchanan played by Joel Edgerton is Daisy's wealthy husband. He is brutal, arrogant and often hypocritical, racist, sexist and does not hesitate to cheat on his wife. He uses his wealth to control and dominate others.
