SERGE GAINSBOURG

The real name of Serge Gainsbourg was Lucien Ginsburg. He was born on the 2nd of April 1928 in Paris and he died on the 2nd of March 1991 in Paris. He was an author, composer, pianist, writer, actor and stage director.

His debuts on stage were difficult because of his physical appearance. Serge Gainsbourg suffered from a feeling of rejection because of his ugliness. Over the years, he created an image of a cursed poet and an agitator.

Until the age of 30, Gainsbourg lived with small jobs. He was an art teacher, a singing teacher... But he would have liked to be a great painter. In 1957, Michele Arnaud and Francis Claude found Gainsbourg's compositions in his room. They were very impressed. The day after, Francis Claude pushed him on stage. After that, he started to put his hits at the SACEM (society of authors, composers and editors of Music). He decided to give up painting to devote himself to music. The public loved him when he composed for Juliette Gréco (Accordéon, la Javanaise) and France Gall (Laisse tomber les filles, Poupée de cire poupée de son).

In 1954, he had a short but strong passion with Brigitte Bardot to whom he dedicated the song "Initials B.B". He also wrote other songs for her like : Harley Davidson, Bonnie and Clyde, Je t'aime moi non plus.

In 1968, he met Jane Birkin for who he will be an author composer. During 10 years, they were a very mediatic couple.

In 1976, he started filmmaking for the first time. His movie "Je t'aime moi non plus" had a lot of success.

In 1979, his song  "La Marseillaise" (reggae) shocked a lot of people.

Offended by the press articles about him, especially with "la Marseillaise", and felling like a misunderstood artist, he consumed a lot of alcohol and tobacco, abandoning his family life.

As the years passed, Gainsbourg will be nicknamed "Gainsbarre" with some more or less alcoholic television appearances. He had (and still has) a cursed poet, badly shaved and drunken image that brought on him either admiration or disgust. He caused several scandals on TV with his provocative behaviour.

In September 1980, after more than 10 years together, Jane Birkin left him. She said during an interview after his death: "I loved Gainsbourg but I was afraid of Gainsbarre".

On the 11th of March 1984, Gainsbourg burned, during a live broadcast, a 500 francs note with his lighter in front of the cameras of the TV show "Sept sur sept". He did that to denounce the tax racket that was up to 74%. This gesture greatly stroke the French public in these years of crisis. He did this same gesture again on an another TV show.

Serge Gainsbourg died on the second of March 1991 in Paris after his fifth heart attack.
