Her work is a relevant form of protest because each installation is about breaking down boundaries. All through her work she’s been showing and denouncing the male domination over women, mainly represented by domination of the body, seen as an object over the individual, both in art and the society.
She is part of a generation of artists from the late 60s whose work challenged institutions and structures in art and the society in general.
She wanted to prove humans are more than they appear.
I don’t know how her work was perceived at the time but it was exhibited in places like Berlin, Venice or Sydney among others sot she was undoubtedly a reknown and appreciated artist.
To my mind, her art is still highly relevant today as the importance of appearances over personnality is a current topic.
Moreover, domination over the woman’s body is still a thing in our culture, as many adverts on TV or in magazine can prove.
What’s more, politically, in many countries women are suffering from control over their bodies and appearances. For example the events in Iran prove it, with women rebelling against the rules of covering their heads and hair.
Western countries are not excluded, as the drawback on abortion laws in the US last summer shows.
So artistic forms of protest, which help mirror what happens at a given period are for me powerful and efficient forms of testimony and denunciation.
To conclude, the first time I saw Rebecca Horn’s work I was attracted to it by its aesthetcis, I like this piece of art and I find it beautiful, but learning about its meaning made me appreciate it all the more.
