Mean, Taylor Swift

Hello everybody, the song we chose is Mean released in 2010 by Taylor Swift. She is a singer song-writer who comes from Pennsylvania in the United States and was born on 1989. Her musical genre is country and pop and it’s important for her to denounce social problems.

First of all, the music is dramatic, sad and a little catchy witch contributes to creating a sorrowful atmosphere. Furthermore, the singer’s voice is high pitched witch allow to getting better the message across. Indeed, at first, the tone is sad and dreary, and then it becomes optimist.

In this song it is question of bullying witch is more and more presents in the world. More over, the title refers to te theme of the song. Since 2010, Taylor Swift is following the gay lesbian and straight education network that fights those crimes and she was also a victim of bullying; so this subject is very important for her.

If we focus on the lyrics, you can see an anaphor of the pronoun « you » witch insists on the wicked person. The first verse talks about the fact bully’s words are powerful and can destroy people, the words are compared to the knives, swords and weapons because people don’t realize that some words are very hurtful and it makes other feel bad about themselves.

Then the chorus refers in the future where the bully will be gone and and the victim will successful more in life than him.

The second verse insists that the bullies are mean because they were once the victim and they want revenge. To end the cycle, victims have to stay strong. Moreover most people who are bullies have been bullied before. In fact, the bullies are doing this for revenge.

In the end of Verse 3, we can observe that nobody listen to bullies and they are unsuccessful in life because of people are tired to listen their criticisms. Moreover, Taylor Swift explains that the bullies will finish alone because nobody would want to be around them if all they ever do is criticize people. Finally, there is a repetition of the word “mean” in order to insist on the wickedness of the bullies.
