We all have a different point of view of the African country and its history. It can be influenced by the books that we red in our childhood, the History subject that we learn at school or even by advertisements or our television but we don’t really know what happened. To what extent can we say that art is recounting Africa’s history throughout the years ? We have three documents to answer this main question, document 1 is a text from a website named “artnet.com”, written on February, 2nd 2019 by Rebecca Anne Proctor. It is about what Africa accomplished and what it can have in the future. Then we have document which is a poem called “Do not fear the past” created by Zuhura Seng’enge about the past and what we can get from it. Finally, document 3 is a picture of an artist, Mary Sibande and her art “I Came Apart At The Seems” that takes place in Somerset House in London. It gather the past, the present and the future of Africa through one woman and her clothes. In order to answer the question we will focus on three main ideas. First, the link between the past, the present and the future, next, modern arts and Africa’s development, and in the end we will see how arts can create a new Africa.
Art had been there since the beginning so obviously it is a link between the different eras of humanity. We can see in document 3 that the artist represented a black woman in 3 different ways or 3 different eras. In document 2, art is linking the past to the future because it warns us about what happened and our history. It is like a lesson and a command to find our true identity and wisdom. Furthermore, the type language used in this document is very important because it is linking past, present and future. In the document 1, the text is about art markets and cultural development. It says that the next African art’s shows will happen in Nigeria and that there will be an African art market soon, we can translate it by a growing business which will lead Africa to a better future. Then further away in the text, Rebecca Anne Proctor wrote that Africa needed infrastructures to welcome raw talents and different arts to help the rising of art’s business and she followed this idea with examples of ambitious institutions that are already rising and a new vision of Africa. So to sum up this document, here, art is in the present because the text was written in 2019 and it keeps going and growing by welcoming new young talents in the future which will give prosperity to the continent. To conclude art is a link between the past, the present and the future, it will always be there because it is inspired by these three moment of our life.
As we all know Africa developed herself in every ways even if some are better than the others. In document 1, the author of the document wrote that “Africa’s art markets has plenty of room to grow” it means that art is taking a major place in Africa’s business which is showing Africa’s positive development, then we can read that museums had been created and built to receive plenty of different artists’ arts with a commercial success and at the end, the idea of creating more “hub” in art capitals to create more content to show and sell to the world and in addition to that there is an increasingly wealthy clientele that put their interest in arts. In document 2, poetry is an art which can me old and modern and here it is a modern way to show Africa’s development because through it we can tell that the continent is free from a false narration that was imposed on them, we know about the past and we want the situation to change so it is showing that Africa is evolving and trying to be better. Finally in document 3, it is nearly like the document 3 for its content because we can see the past, the present and the future in one person and we can really see the differences, the change and the contrast between the 3 times. The person does not stay the same, her clothes are changing, the mindset too and the situation as well, because we can see freedom between the 3 structures and also knowledge with all of the purple roots. To conclude, modern art illustrates Africa’s development by putting contrast between then and now and by its effects on the continent.
