How has the family structure changed since the fifties?

celle d'aujourd'huiween those who have approved of these changes and those who resist and criticize them in the name of tradition. In what the family structure has changed since the fifties ?

I have chosen to pay attention to the past family structure in my first part and then, in my second part, I am going to discuss on the modern family in our societies.

The past family and the modern family have a structure which is completely different: the family structure in the past was a nuclear family which is a family group consisting of two parents and their children (quite often 2). Then, in the past family, there wasn’t equality between women and men. The couples married earlier and divorce didn’t exist. The women didn’t work, they used all of their energy for their husband and their kids. As for the men, they had to work to bring money for their family. « The nuclear family » is a picture which shows us a traditionnal family in the fifties. There are all family members and they look happy to be together. The family is headed by the father who works and brings money to the household. The mother stays at home all the day, she has no qualification. They have 2 kids. The first born is a boy and then it’s a girl. They look happy to see their dad who come back from his office. So, in the past family, the woman had a social function.

Today, the family structure has changed, women are equal to men and there is no norm to have a nuclear family anymore. The family structure is more flexible.

Indeed, the society has evolved and the modern society is much more tolerant. So, the family structure is less stric. First of all, men and women have the same place in the family. The man doesn’t lead the family anymore. The woman can do studies and she can work as the man. In most of household, she is not the only one to do housework anymore. But, also, some families has changed their structure, I mean the nuclear family is not the only one anymore, there are also same sex couples, or some families with a single parent and children. On a picture from a US TV show entitled « The modern family », we can describe 3 different family structures : the first two are nuclear families with respectively 1 kid and 3 kids and the last family is a gay couple with a child.
