AMERICAN DREAM

The American dream is the notion that the American social, economic, and political system makes success possible for every individual.

Someone who manages to achieve their version of the American dream is said to be « living the dream »

Furthermore, the origin of the American dream comes from the departure of the government and the economics of the European model. This freedom evokes the possibility that in American even if borne poor, the social progression is possible whereas on the European model where the social ascent is no existent.

 We’ll say that he American dream is characterized by the idea of an America full of promises and very attractive. It lets people thinks that anybody living in America, thanks to courage, work and determination, can succed. People can start from scratch and makes fortune.  So, many foreigners came to america to begin a new and better life.

 

Indeed, the american dream was a driving factor not only in the gold rush but also in the waves of immigration that took place in the 18th century and the following century. The immigrants quickly adopted American dream.

 

For millions of immigrants the new world represented freedom, opportunity equality, growth and progress, in fact it also meant:

 

  • 1.    To cut off one’s roots and abandon one’s culture and language.
  • 2.    -To face a difficult journey : promiscuity and illness often turned the crossing into a nightmare.
  • 3.    -To accepte low-paid jobs and live in the pourest distrincts Neux york.

 

On the other hand, as early as the 18th century, many Europeans went to the USA for a better quality of life :

 

·      For example Irish who wanted to escape the famine that struck in their country.

·      The anti-Napoleon who reproached Napoleo first to devastate everything in its path.

To illustrate the American dream we're going to talk about Barack Obama who is the 44th president of the USA and the first Afro-American. His campaign was intended to restore the American Dream which is a value of the USA.
The American Dream concerns all American citizens who can prosper thanks to their work, their courage, their spirit and their determination.

In the XX century, black people were segregated and excluded of this dream so they fought to take part of the American Dream and to have the same rights as white people.

So how can Barack Obama embodies the Black American Dream?  

Obama was born in 1961 at Hawaii. His mother is American and his father is Kenyan. He graduated from the Columbia University of New-York, and studied at the Harvard University. He worked in a ghetto to help poor people.

He became senator in 2004 and stand for the presidential elections.

He wanted to restore the American Dream, forgotten according to him. Obama said "Who would have thought that a black man of 40 years, named Barack Obama, could one day become the candidate of the Democratic Party" after triumphing over his rival Hillary Clinton at a primary election.

Millions of Americans then recognized themselves in this man, pleading for the reconciliation of Americans beyond the differences of race, age or sex.

He was elected in 2008 and is election showed that the American Dream is also for descendants of migrants and for Afro-Americans. The day of his election is a public holiday in Kenya, to show the pride of his country. His success is more important since he was re-elected in 2012.

The dream of Martin Luther King for the equality between white and black people and the black American Dream managed to become true with Obama’s election as first Afro-American president.
