Freak shows developed in the USA and in England during the 19th century. They were called so (valeur de reprise de so

-> = they were called freak shows ) to designate the type of show in which "freaks" were exhibited. A freak show is the exhibition of human beings described as "human monsters" with characteristics and physical distortions that shocked the viewers .(il faut conserver la logique temporelle, on parle d’un passé révolu - > preterit)

Actually /in fact/ indeed,(ce mot de liaison pour approfondir, donner une explication quant à ce premier argument qu’on vient d’introduire) The Victorian times (19th c.) were a century of discoveries and evolution : the communication means developed and people were attracted by what was exotic and unknown . That’s why those freak shows developed without being considered immoral : they attracted a curious public who wanted to give themselves chills by discovering men and women who were out of the ordinary as regards their physical aspect (as regards= en ce qui concerne) . What was saleable as far as oddities were concerned was, of course, their physical differences and their exotic origins.

The showman in charge of the show, was expected to promote it and attract the public by mentioning the freaks’ exotic origins as well as their distorsions, and by trying to keep the mysterious part about them/ by +v- ing = complément de manière : « en + participe présent – en mentionnant, en essayant » . I mean that the medical field or diseases were never mentioned .

However= cependant, In spite of / Despite of ( = malgré) how successful those shows were, the oddities’s feelings were not taken into account/ were not considered. (Dernier point à développer et à illustrer par un exemple précis, The Elephant Man par exemple et conclure en donnant votre point de vue)
