In recent years, crime has increased dramatically. However, studies has shown that crime rates are lower among those with educational degrees. So, some people think that the best way to reduce the crime rate is to educate criminals who are still in prison.

In my opinion, educating criminals in prison is a good thing and has many advantages but I’m not agree with the fact that is the best way to reduce the crime rate.

Crime results from a lack of moral conscience. The major advantage of education is that it will enable a prisoner to learn the principles and values of life. Educating a prisoner during his sentence will certainly make him realize the gravity of his actions, and that there is a better way to live his life than in crime. Indeed, doing education activities and learning new things can open a person's mind, and allow them to become a better person.

Furthermore, education in prison open the doors of future opportunities : this can allow a criminal to integrate into society and find employment after release from prison. This would make it possible for him to earn money and support themselves. Hence, they will not need to commit crimes in order to earn money, which is one of the main factors of crime. Making money by obeying the low will therefore help reduce the crime rate.

Nevertheless, this is not the best way. In fact, educating a criminal in prison can’t guarantee that he will not start committing offenses again. It is true that this can allow him to find unemployment easier but this is often not the case.

When a criminal leaves prison, he leaves with a handicap : having been imprisoned.  Employees will continue to despise ex-convicts despite having received an education in prison. Many of them will not employ them even if they have the required skills. This tends to frustrate and discourage the ex-convicts, and make them fall into their criminal ways. I think that in addition to education given in prison, the governement should provide employment assistance on release for the former prisoners.

Plus, some criminals like the easy money and the “Gangsta” way of life. Once they get out of jail, they still want to commit more crimes to challenge the government and educating them won’t change anything.

Other criminals, like killers, psychopaths, pedophiles etc ... have psychological problems and psychological support will be more necessary than education in order to understand the reasons which pushed them to commit these crimes.

To conclude, I think that education in prison can reduce the crime rate in a better way only if the government helps prisoners out of prison, and there are other ways to reduce it such as psychological monitoring of criminals.
