The consumption evolution throughout the years:

  • 1945: The year is 1945, all the European countries have just gotten out of war, all their expenses went into military spendings, the economy, if we can speak about an economy, because it was really bad. The consumption was tragic, people lived to survive, and didn’t try to please themselves.
  • 1945-1975;glorioustrents :a few years after the war , economy had risen a little back, families now own cars, travel and consuming had become a routine. We had seen ads about the “nuclear family” everywhere, ads encouraging people to consume more and more.
  • 1975:  with the oil shocks, the economy went into a bad place, as consuming was very low, since everything had become based on oil (travels, merchandise transportation, etc…), the mass unemployment phenomena had started to show up.

  • We can note that 45 kg of raw materials are consumed per day per person today`( where as it was only33 kg in 2011) and it is only growing with the population’s need to consume.
  • We should not forget that with this mass consumption,50 billion tons of CO2are being rejected in the atmosphere, making only harder for us to survive.

🡪mass consuming is basically justified by non-satisfaction, always want to improve our current situation, and by the fact that everything is produced in big quantities

🡪This has led to appear a Middle class, a classification of people not too rich to own everything, but not too poor to afford travels, buy the latest technologies…(stabilization of the economy)

The consumerism is a trend characterized by the meeting of consumers in associations to defend their interests. Also this theory shows that the consumption of goods allows an economic benefit.
