Devoir maison, The Truman Show
1. this film tells the story of a man, Truman Burbank, born and raised inside a huge television studio created to look like the real life. Truman thinks his little world represent a true world. The illusion is maintained by the people who surround him : his mother, his wife or his bestfriend, all are actors, conspire against Truman. Imagined by a producer, Christof, his gestures and actions are permanently shot by 5000 cameras which resemble to a successful TV show. Step by step, Truman is beginning to doubt about the authenticity of his world ; and very soon he will discover that his entire existence is only lie. Being aware of the trickery, Truman will try to run away against the man's will who schemed everything for thirty years. At the end of the film, we are shown the hero face to the truth that he will finally choose.
2. Truman literally means the true man ("true" + "man"). In the Truman Show, he is the only one who does not play comedy in a world only created for him but also against him. He is always at the center of everyone.
3. I have noticed a scene and an object as exemples which made me realise something was wrong in Truman life. The scene in which the projector falls down of the false sky. At this point, Truman is very surprised, he doesn't know what to think. The second point i memorised is when Truman was in his car listening to the radio and delivering a dialogue with the radio animator in spite of a monologue.
At 26 minutes of the film, Truman cross a woman, Sylvia, who told him that everything in his world is false. In fact, Truman doesn't understand.
Likewise in family photographs, he finds a wedding photo with Meryl which crossing her fingers during the exchange of rings wich proved the lie once more.
4. Radio is the manipulation voice : a lie is used to explain the projector's fall and the animator assure him that Truman will not leave Seahaven. At the start of the film, the newspapers show Seahaven as the most beautiful city in the world. Everything in thought to keep Truman in the world created for him that's why the medias have a great influence on Truman. He is naive but not stupid and he will finally discover that he was manipulated.
5. The aptly-named Christof is a mysterious character with a God complex who uses his omnipresence to control Truman - both physically and mentally - for the sake of ratings. the creator of "The Truman Show" and Seahaven Island. He has devoted his life for the past 30 years to the program - even though Truman has no idea Christof exists.
St. Christof is generally represented crossing a river, holding a cane and bearing the baby-christ. He carried the child who seemed to him becoming heavier and heavier. To him, it was like bearing the world on his shoulders.
I think that it is the same thing with Christof and Truman in the film.
6. Personnaly, i find that Truman is manipulated. All around him there only are lies even if he's the only source of truth. His world is source of perfection what seems to me absolutly impossible. I feel anger and sadness for Truman. This kind of TV Show should be forbidden by the law as well as grow a child
