The Princess of Cleves – a review
Have you ever been passionate about someone when your heart was already taken? In her novel, The Princess of Cleves, Madame De Lafayette tells the story of a princess at the royal court of Henri II and her fight against love passion.
At the beginning of the novel, the main character is known as Mademoiselle de Chartres. She has all the values that a lady of the court should have: she embodies virtue, beauty and sincerity. She is also very wealthy and therefore very coveted. She received a strict and religious education. When the princess appears at court, she does not know love. She is quickly married to the Prince of Cleves whom she esteems without loving him. Later, during a party, the princess meets the Duke of Nemours and they fall passionately in love.
Although they love each other, this love is morally impossible. The Princess of Cleves is affected by feelings that she was unaware of before such as jealousy, betrayal and suffering. She is torn between the temptation of love and her husband's respect. I wondered if the princess was going to follow her heart or her reason and, at the end of the novel, I was surprised by her decision.
The Princess of Cleves is a magnificent novel, full of twists and turns, on the torments of love. I highly recommend you read this book and I promise you won't regret it.
