The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission…
Today, the first step on March and the colonization of the red planet are in
everyone's minds. In fact, man always wants to go further, discover and colonize
more too. However, technological and scientific limits hinder man's willingness to
explore the universe around him. Despite this, human ambitions have become much
greater and technological advances have advanced enormously in comparison with the
beginning of the space conquest and this famous first step on the Moon. In fact, in
2019, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's first step on the
Moon on July 20, 1969, with the Apollo 11 mission. This event is arguably one of
the most important events of the 20th century, and it will also remain forever
engraved in the history of human civilization, as well as the cult phrase
pronounced by Neill Armstrong that's one small steps for man. One giant leap for
mankind”, which shows all the symbolism of this discovery for humanity.
The conquest of the Moon and space in general began during the Cold War with the
«Space Race». It was a series of competitive technology demonstrations between the
United States and the Soviet Union, aiming to show superiority in spaceflight.
The competition began with a spectacular victory of the Soviet Union with the first
successful launch with the October 4, 1957 orbiting of « Sputnik », and also sent
the first human to space with the orbital flight of Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961.
The USSR also sent the first woman Valentina Tereshkova to space on June 16, 1963.
However, the creation of NASA on the American side was a major turning point in the
space course. NASA's main objective was to send the first man to the moon and bring
him back to Earth. And that's what they managed to do in 1969 with the Apollo 11
mission, resulting in a victory for USA in the space race.
The Space Race led to pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites, uncrewed
space probes of the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and human spaceflight in low Earth orbit
and to the Moon.
Even today, this mission is in everyone's minds, thanks to many films and
documentaries about Apollo 11, but also to conspiracy theories that the Americans
never landed on the Moon in 1969. In addition, the Moon still attracts, indeed
Donald Trump would like to send American astronauts once again to the Moon by 2024.
But the main objective is to send a human to Mars. That's what Elon Musk's Space X
is trying to accomplish. We can then ask ourselves how far the conquest of space
and technology can go in the coming decades and centuries
