I am going to talk about « The Idea of Progress ». This notion can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change (technical, scientific or social advance) which contribute to making the world a better place.

To discuss this notion I choose to talk about India. In fact, it’s a country which is changing and progress rapidly . I fell India illustrates well the notion because it’s a country which is modernizing in spite of some old traditions.

So now let’s answer the question: Why is India said to be a country of contradictions?

PART I

With 1,2 billion inhabitants, which represent 17,5% of the world's population, India is the second most populated country. [This country is also the seventh largest country in the world.] This country, which had been a British colony since the 16th century to 1947, is now the largest democracy in the world.

It is one of the few countries in the world that has had women president. Its stability was shaken several times, but it has remained a democracy.

To introduce this topic we have seen a picture which representing a contrasted India. We have seen people gathered in a beach and looking the sky. It clearly represents India as a country of contrast. One the hand we have seen city’s skyscrapers and new buildings of India which show India as a booming country. On the other hand saris who wear women indicated that traditions haven’t disappeared. Furthermore, the camera is focused on a couple with their two child; they are representative of the two child policy established by India government.

Also, India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and we have seen that the population will overtake China’s by 2030.

PART II

After a long period of poverty and financial difficulties, India is now growing. It is a modern city which has been made advances in economic, political and social aspect.

The bar charts of the document entitled « A country on the march » shows that there is a progress concerning the main sectors of activity ; culture and industry are decreasing to the benefit of services, which has increased dramatically. The growth of High-tech cities sector has been the principal pillar helping India to achieve record GDP growth. In an audio report entitled « High-tech cities », we can take the example of Sirisha an Indian entrepreneur. She returned to India five years ago to create his Quislex company which is located in Hyderabad also called Cyberabad.

She thinks that there is a huge difference between the India she left and today’s India. It is now a country on the march with a rapidly changing economy thanks to the rapid development of the high-tech sector. Its GDP has grown at an annual rate of 8% for several years.

Again, we have view in a text entitled « Changing India » that mentalities are shifting, there is a social evolution. In fact, in some places, traditions disappear: young people get cell phones, couple are ending marriages, and children pursue vocations they want and not theirs of their parents.

To further illustrate this « Idea of progress » with this document, in the journalist's opinion, the greatest change is that today Indians do not have to leave to acheive their dreams. They are in a new state of mind, they realize that they can beat the odds by deciding about their own lives themselves. According to the writer, leaving India becomes a choice, not a necessity.

However, I’m convinced that this development hides another face of India with poverty and the inequalities that persist.
